When does a rule protect a community, and when does it ask too much of someone?

Join Humanities New York and Queens Public Library for “When Is It Time to Break the Rules?”, a Community Conversation exploring authority, dissent, and our responsibilities to one another.

A short passage from Sophocles’ Antigone will open a guided conversation about what happens when personal conviction comes into conflict with law, authority, or the expectations of a community. Together, participants will consider when rules hold communities together, when they should be questioned, and what it means to decide that a rule should be broken.

No advance reading or registration is required. Participants are invited to bring their own experiences to this free, guided discussion. Light refreshments will be provided by the Friends of Ridgewood.

This program is the final installment of The Future of Democracy: Conflict, Disagreement, and Civic Life, presented in partnership with Queens Public Library.
