Freedom, Joy, and the Common Good

  • Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library 455 5th Avenue New York, NY, 10016 United States (map)

What makes a choice feel reasonable, and what does that have to do with freedom?

This Community Conversation begins with a short excerpt from Zadie Smith’s essay “Joy.” From there, the discussion turns to a larger question: how habits of market thinking—efficiency, productivity, “making good use of time”—shape what we value, and what kinds of freedom feel possible.

Together, participants will reflect on the difference between pleasure and joy, and consider what those distinctions reveal about freedom, dignity, and the shared conditions that make a “common good” possible.

Community Conversations are informal, welcoming discussions. No preparation is required.
